We wanted to share some information on how to do a Hot Oil Treatment with Argan Oil.
What is a Hot Oil Treatment?
Well, the name is sort of a giveaway. Its a treatment done to dry, brittle, damaged or otherwise unruly hair to give it moisture and make it more manageable.
A hot oil treatment is used to condition and give hair moisture without having to condition every day. It leaves hair looking more healthy after being colored, styled, sun damaged or anything else that may have caused lackluster hair.
How often?
Generally hot oil treatments are done every week, or every other week, depending on the condition of your hair.
What will I need to do a hot oil treatment?
You will need a glass bowl or bottle of some sort, a means of heating up water, a plastic cap for your head and that’s about it.
How do I a hot oil treatment?
1. Boil some water in a pot and then remove from the flame.
2. Mix your favorite oils (we will give you a list below) in a glass bowl or container. You will want to mix enough so that you have about 1/4 – 1/2 a cup depending on how long your hair is.
3. Place the glass bowl or container in the pot of boiling or very hot water in order to heat the oil (almost like a double boiler). Let it sit in the water for approximately 10 minutes so that the oil is nice a hot. DO NOT HEAT OIL IN THE MICROWAVE – it will lose its natural benefits.
4. Test the oil with your finger to ensure it is not too hot and will not burn your scalp.
5. When a good temperature, apply oil to your hair a scalp. You don’t want your hair to be dripping or anything, just evenly coated.
6. Put the plastic cap over your head and let the oil work its magic for 20-30 minutes.
7. For additional conditioning, apply a wet (not dripping) warm towel to your head for 20-30 minutes. The towel should cover all of your hair.
8. Shampoo and Condition your hair as usual.
What oils can I use for a hot oil treatment? And what are their benefits?
Argan Oil: Naturally hydrates your hair and enhances the elasticity. It also helps prevent breakage.
Avocado Oil: Great for super dry and frizzy hair, avocado oil is great for moisturizing and is full of healthy fats.
Castor Oil: A very thick oil that is good for extremely dry hair. It can also help repair thin and brittle hair that tends to break easily.
Jojoba Oil: Great oil for sealing the hair.
Olive Oil: Good for protecting your ends from splitting and breaking.
Coconut Oil: Great for softening your hair.
Sweet Almond: Great for smoothing the hair cuticle and helps support hair health.
Tea Tree Oil: Great for dandruff. Add 2-3 drops to your oil mixture.
Make your mixture based on the state of your hair and what you have around the house. Our personal favorite is a mixture of Argan Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil and a few drops of Tea Tree oil.

If you have long tangly hair, like I do, it may be a good idea to comb out and de-tangle your hair while you have the oils in there.
This treatment should leave your hair noticeably more soft, shiny and manageable.
